Getting a bigger turtle tank help!?

I am hopefully getting a bigger fish tank for my turtle by the end of week because he has out grown his 10 gallon which was meant for a temporary home. I am getting a 38 gallon because i dont have room for anything bigger, but it should be ok because he's only about 3 inches big If you have any tips on setting it up please tell me. I'm getting the box kit from Petco which includes the glass tank, a filter, a light and bulb plus the top and i think sample food and water conditioner. Plus i'm going to get my turtle a bigger floating dock because he has out grown his. Do I need anything ells for my turtle? I'm not sure but i dont want to have to break my piggy bank. Oh and one more question, do i need a canister filter?

Okay, firstly i would recommend you check the quality of the filter they are offering with this deal. Your turtles bigger now and in a bigger tank, their waste gets bigger with them and many regular filters just dont cut it...youll end up doing partial water changes every other day and cleaning at least once a week. I recommend spending a little extra on a Fluval external filter...always get one with the ability to clean more water than will be in your tank as turtles make bigger waste..so if the filter says up to 40 gallons get the next biggest size.
To reduce this problem you should keep your 10 gallon as a feeder tank...just have enough water in it to feed you turtle...(it doesnt matter that its cold as he will only be in it for 5 mins or less) this REALLY helps to cut out the water quality problem with turtles.
A 38 gallon sounds fine but bear in mind you may need to get a bigger one as your turtle grows, Im not sure what species you have, Ive got 6 turtles atm, most are rescued but my 9 inch sliders lives in a 150 gallon tank, with a DIY cave, a large basking area and lots of plants/cover.
Its not advertised enough that turtles love to have an underwater/partially underwater hide..i made one of these by creating a box of wood with the side facing in cut out like a door, a ramp is attached from one side and her basking area is on top of the cave.
