What is the best battery for a Honda 50 Outboard with stereo?
I have a 17 foot 1993 Sailfish 150 (Knockoff whaler) with a 1997 Honda 50 hp 4 stroke on it. The battery the boat came with wouldn't hold a charge so i need to buy a new battery. It came with a 1000 MCA Starting battery and all the boat had on it was the engine, bilge pump and nav lights. I am adding a small (2 speaker) stereo, a VHF, and possibly a Fish Finder. What type/size of marine battery would you recommend for this setup. Thanks in advance, Andrew
As you know, the problem is not the type of battery you use, just buy a quality, new battery that will hold a charge, deep cycle if you are going to use the stereo and other electronics while the boat is not running, but remember the stator type charging system on the Outboard Motor will only provide about 15 amps of charging, so do not expect it to charge as well as a car alternator. Realize that you may need to "recharge" the battery between outings to have a full charge. For cranking power in this outboard, anything over 500 MCa will do it just fine. One thing you might want to consider is to add an auxiliary battery, isolated from your starting battery, that way you will not run down your main battery.
