What are the advantages and disadvantages of Outboard Engine vs Inboard on a small 18ft boat??
I test drove the Hurricane 18ft boat this weekend and it was a fun boat, but loud... would a inboard be quieter???

On a hurricane 187 sundeck (or fundeck model) you have choices of outboards, or inboard/outboard. I sold Hurricane (Godfrey) products for 8 years - they are great boats, well built, and all in all a great Deck Boat choice. Was the outboard you tested a 2 stroke? Today's 4 stroke motors are extremely quiet - so I think it must have been.
I always used to try to get people to buy Hurricanes with 4 Stroke Yamaha's (Honda's are also just as good) - reason is that when we sold a boat with a Yamaha 4 stroke - we never had the customer coming back with motor issue's -NEVER!
I would buy the 4 stroke out board because - they are quiet, they are fuel efficient, they are easy to maintain, they are pretty much maintenance free, they are reliable, and really just great engines! I would personally buy the Yamaha 4 stroke F-150 - its the perfect motor for that boat!
If you decide to go I/O you will most likely be getting the 4.3 merc (190hp) 4.3FI (220hp) or the 5.0 (220hp) - I would say the biggest advantage to the I/O is the fact that you don't really see the motor, and that if you are a big watersports person - they typically are more powerful and you can get the extended swim platform. Other then that they are less fuel efficient, just as loud if not louder, need more maintenance, and in the long run you will spend much less on repairs.
For my money 4 Stroke Outboard all the way (unless you are a huge watersports person)
