Since Gold is denser than lead, can gold block gamma radiation?

Well, your chemistry teacher is partially correct. I think he should have said that lead and concrete are the most PRACTICAL shielding materials for gamma radiations.
In fact, any material blocks gamma radiations to some degree. The measure of the effectiveness of the material as a gamma shield is called the "half-thickness" -- the thickness of a material that will reduce the gamma ray exposure by half.
The half thickness for gamma radiations emitted by U-235 for a variety of materials is:
Lead = 0.06 cm
Concrete = 4.24 cm
Water = 12.44 cm
Iron = 0.8 cm
Tungsten = 0.04 cm
Lead Glass = 0.08 cm
Aluminum = 2.1 cm
You can even use uranium itself as a shield -- the half-thickness is 0.04 cm!
For the gamma emissions of Cesium 137 (which are more energetic than the Uranium gammas), the equivalent half-thicknesses are:
Lead = 0.56 cm
Concrete = 6.24 cm
Water = 14.96 cm
Iron = 1.9 cm
Tungsten = 0.44 cm
Uranium = 0.32 cm
Lead Glass = 0.6 cm
Aluminum = 5.6 cm
As you can see, tungsten is actually a slightly better shielding material than lead. The problem is finding enough tungsten to make your shield and, as others have noted, the value of that much tungsten makes it an attractive target for theft. Gold would present the same problems, making it impractical for gamma ray shielding.
