Replacement for old Inboard Outboard engine, what sterndrive?
I have an old Grew 215 with the original OMC engine and sterndrive. Parts are no longer readily available to perform repairs so I want to replace this with a Mercruiser, I have found many engines on eBay but they don't come with sterndrives.
My question is, can I match any sterndrive with any engine or are there specific combination that only work. I am currently looking at a 5.0L engine, I see Alpha, Alpha Gen II, Bravo, etc. but don't know which one I need.
Any help would be appreciated.
I would have to agree with the others on this one. One cannot mix and match engine makes. Hole patterns are going to be different. How does the transom feel? If there is weak spots then might consider reglassing the transom. Then you can cut and drill holes for the Mercruiser Outdrive. Now to address the one you need? First ask yourself what kind of boat is it? What performance do you want out of it? How is the boat going to be used? Etc... MerCruiser as you have seen makes several kind of drives. Each one designed for different applications. Depending on the year you have the pre-alpha drives which include drive models R/MR..etc. These drives are pre 1975? I think. Someone correct me if I am wrong. From 1975 to about 1990 I think were the Alpha One drives, then from 1990 to the present they are the Alpha One Gen 2 drives. None of the Alpha drives can be mixed and matched. The Bravo One, are performance drives. Alpha drives are good up to 300 hp. Anything above that you need to use the Bravo drive. I hope this helps in your descision in finding the right drive combination. Just remember that Alpha drives are good up to 300hp. So you can use any GM engine (with the exception of big blocks) that you want as long as the engine does not produce over 300hp. Also Alpha drives are good for speeds up to around 65mph. If you try and modify or get more speed out of it then you will be taking a chance of experiencing drive blowout.
