Can Mercury and bread really find a body in the water?

In the "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," Huck fakes his murder and goes to an island to wait out the search party. They blast cannons balls into the water to help resurface his body (physics), but they also sent out loaves of bread with a plug of quicksilver (mercury) in them. Does anyone know if this is trie? Can mercury really find a dead body?
This wasn't even a big part of the story, it was less than a paragraph long and was in the beginning of the story!

I doubt it, and it would never be used today because of how toxic mercury is
