mercruiser 1989 4.3 L, 175 hp. Sterndrive growls. Checked lower unit lube and crankcase oil. Both are full?
This is a 20 year old boat but only has about 190 hours on the engine. Water pump impeller replaced and service at the end of th2007 season.
Try turning the drive full left and full right with the engine running, but the gearshift in N. It it gets much louder it's the Gimble Bearing. That's actually in the transom housing. There is a grease fitting on the outside of the drive that needs regular grease. It's not that hard to replace, but relatively expensive. You often find a bad bellows that is leaking water, thus the bearing fails... This can total $500 or more to repair.
