How do i wire an outboard marine tach?
The tach has a 3 pin wire that attaches to the control box, but it also has 3 seperate wires comming out of the back that i don't know what they are for. This is all for a pontoon boat i'm rebuilding with a 1986 40 HP Johnson OB. The tach worked before, and the 3 lead wires i'm talking about were hooked up to something. I just don't know what?
Depends on the Manufacturer. I not done this in a long time. If, I remember correct, on a Mercury the Control Box (Shift/Throttle) has a Plug on the Forward side and you can buy a Tach specific to this and just plug it in. I know there a place on the Engine and you can run wires Direct it my be like a Distribution box where wires connect. Be easy to find and may be labeled (Ing.=ignition) (tach.=Tachometer). Sorry this all I know, maybe someone know more, just offer this in case no one else responds.
IF, the Tach is new in the box, it may have some instructions for differet brands, ie, Merc, Yamaha etc.
