Should I sign the contract?
Hi there.
I've been in my current job for too long now and need a move. I've been offered another one, but the contract I have to sign says my hours are 9:00 - 5:30pm; plus any additional time required (at no extra cost to the company unless agreed with my manager). This seems pretty open-ended to me!
I'm sure in reality I'm just worrying too much, but I'm not sure whether I should tell my emloyer that this is unreasonable.
Also, I spend all day doing CAD work and they have really old monitors. I struggle with eye-strain, so should I mention this before I join, if I join? Do you think I'll be rocking the boat too early if I ask for a new monitor? Should I wait until I get my feet under the table?

The phrase "plus any additional time required" is totally unacceptable, especially combined with "at no extra cost to the company" - you don't agree to that! This is not normal at all!
It may be the case that overtime may be a requirement from time to time, but you should clarify the terms of this. You should not agree to do UNPAID work!
Regarding the monitors - (if you are still interested in the job!) - employers are legally required to undertake health & safety risk assessments for all staff and the monitor should be included in this. I think you should wait to be in position before requesting an assessment be carried out though.
