Boat Engine

I have a 454 jet boat engine it is older and when i start it i have to spray carb cleaner, starter fluid in it?

I was told that it is because the engine hasn't ran in over a year and a half before this year, and after running the motor for a while the problem will cease. I took it out about 5 timex this summer fishing and lake. The problem is still occurring??? Any suggestions

If u have to use starter fluid every time it sounds like u r not getting enough spark. Starter fluid basically acts as a giant spark to get the motor started. Don't use too much of it though it will eventually create a hole in ur pistons because it is so concentrated. So if u replace the spark plugs it should solve the problem
